چکیده

ÐTi±Si mixtures were subjected to high-strain-rate deformation at a pressure below the threshold for shock-wave initiation. Whereas the collapse of interparticle pores did not initiate reaction, regions of localized macro-deformation initiated reaction inside shear bands at suciently high strains (g010), and propagation of the reaction through the entire specimen at higher strains (g020±40). This study demonstrates that temperature increases in shear localization regions can initiate chemical reaction inside a reactive powder mixture. The shear band spacing was 00.6±1 mm. Thermodynamic and kinetic calculations yield the reaction rate outside the shear bands, in the homogeneously deformed material, which has a maximum value of 20 sÿ1 at 1685 K. # 1998 Acta Metallurgica Inc.

Shear-Induced Exothermic Chemical Reactions

The structure of controlled high-strain-rate shear bands generated in Ti-Si reactive powders has been investigated by means of the radd symmetric collapse of a thick-walled cylinder. Shear localization developed at global strains of 0.2-0.4 and a strain rate of lo4 s-I. Within the shear bands, local shear strains were up to 100 9d local shear strain rates were lo7 s-'. Chemical reactions were i...

Shear softening and structure in a simulated three-dimensional binary glass.

Three-dimensional model binary glasses produced by quenching from a range of liquid temperatures were tested in shear over a range of strain rates using molecular-dynamics techniques. Tests were performed under constant volume and constant pressure constraints. The simulations revealed a systematic change in short-range order as a function of the thermal and strain history of the glass. While s...

Shear Band Formation in Bulk Metallic Glasses

In recent times, there has been a growing interest in the machining of amorphous metallic alloys, which are also called bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). These materials differ from common polycrystalline metallic alloys, because their atoms do not assemble on a crystalline lattice, and as a result, they have unique physical, mechanical, and chemical properties. A number of BMGs have been found to ...

Frictional strength and strain weakening in simulated fault gouge: Competition between geometrical weakening and chemical strengthening

[1] Despite the importance of hydromechanical effects in fault processes, not much is known about the interplay of chemical and mechanical processes, in part because the conditions are difficult to simulate in the laboratory. We report results from an experimental study of simulated fault gouge composed of rock salt sheared under conditions where pressure solution is known to operate. At slidin...

A shear localization mechanism for lubricity of amorphous carbon materials

Amorphous carbon is one of the most lubricious materials known, but the mechanism is not well understood. It is counterintuitive that such a strong covalent solid could exhibit exceptional lubricity. A prevailing view is that lubricity of amorphous carbon results from chemical passivation of dangling bonds on surfaces. Here we show instead that lubricity arises from shear induced strain localiz...
